4 New and/or improved coatings

by Jake Poinier

Day-to-day interior and exterior paints are the coatings you and your crew typically spend the most time working with, but some jobs require specialty formulations to achieve a certain appearance, performance level, or attribute.

Manufacturers are constantly improving and developing new products, so it can be hard to keep up with what’s new, so we searched out a few of those products to introduce you to here:

COOLER BY FAR

Sherwin-Williams recently introduced Cool Feel Color Technology into its SuperDeck Exterior Waterborne Solid Color Deck Stain, part of the company’s SuperDeck Deck Care System. Developed to reduce deck surface temperatures by up to 20˚F when compared to conventional color technology on new, weathered, or previously stained wood—and most composite decking installations—this new, scuff-resistant formulation also offers UV protection, and is fade and mildew resistant. Available in 20 solid, opaque colors.

A ‘NOTABLE’ OPTION

Benjamin Moore Notable Dry Erase Paint transforms almost any surface into a dry erase board. This two-component formulation delivers premium performance, easy application, and extended life. Using either the white for a classic whiteboard look or clear to transform any of the 3,500+ Benjamin Moore colors into a dry erase surface, Notable can create collaborative and creative spaces within both residential and commercial environments.

ADD CHARACTER

Whether you’re trying to give character to wood, cast stone, concrete, or metal surfaces—or upcycle vintage furniture—KILZ Chalk Style Paint delivers. The fast-drying, low-VOC formula provides superior coverage and hide, and is an effortless application over most existing furnishes, with minimal surface prep. For an antique look, use two contrasting paint colors, then distress with sandpaper and seal with KILZ Dark Sealing Wax.

HARD-TO-BOND SURFACES

Some of the most difficult substrates that painting pros encounter include fiberglass, laminate and many plastics. PPG Paints Break-Through! Interior/Exterior Water-Borne Acrylic is a versatile, ultra-durable paint that’s specifically formulated to bond to those types of surfaces. It provides hardness similar to or better than standard alkyds in a low-VOC formula. Meanwhile, it maintains flexibility to endure extreme bends and deformation without cracking and peeling.

The gloss finish offers a quick dry time (17–20 minutes to touch and two hours for recoat) and ensures outstanding early block resistance for increased productivity with less downtime. Break-Through! is ideal for doors, windows, shelving, hand rails, fixtures, trim, wood and concrete floors.
